Today is my birthday. My Costa buddies woke me up at 4 to drive across the country to do some white water rafting on the Pacuari River.

Class 4 rapids through amazing scenery in the middle of the jungle...Love it!

After our awesome birthday adventure time to head back.

What a nice place to come home to at the Maria Bravo in Hermosa. It's private, on the beach, beautiful clean, roomy accommodations,  I really like it here.

                                      Not much of a swell today, but plenty of sand dollars!

It was good to fish with Dana again. We've been friends for a long time. We've shot more HTF episodes aboard his boat than any other Captain always producing fish and a great show... but today topped them all 

the day ended with a Grand Slam ! 3 Blue Marlin, One Striped Marlin, 4 Sails and a bunch of Dorados.... Just epic!

                            Each trip to Costa is harder to leave than the last.

                                                

We are so blessed. Hangin' in paradise, chasing new adventures and sharing memories with a first time fisherman... it just doesn't get much better.

A group led by University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science graduate student Patrick Rynne has set out to change the way scientists disseminate their work to the world. The effort, dubbed The Waterlust Project, is a film project aimed at inspiring a broad audience to consider their relationships with water. Teaming up with GoPro, the manufacturer of the world's most popular action sports camera called the Hero, Rynne hopes to show scientists that making their own films is not only relatively easy, but critical to broadening the impact of their work.

Water covers most of the planet and is vital to our existence. From drinking water to coastal waters used for recreational purposes, everyone has a link to water. The Waterlust Project attempts to connect and educate through this common bond.

“As a marine scientist I've noticed a reluctance by some to embrace film as a legitimate outlet for their work. But why shouldn’t it be?” asks Rynne. “We’re not trying to say that scientific papers and posters aren't important; they serve a definite purpose. But these outlets mostly reach people that already care about what we do. The challenge is how to inspire a wider group of people that don’t already care… that’s the key.“

The SUP Mexico crew is loading up for the Punta Sayulita Classic. The crew will be meeting up with our athletes Fernando Stalla, Candice Appleby & Anthony Vela for a fun weekend full of SUP races and surfing contests. We are excited to make are way over and attend another great race in Mexico. Be sure to get signed up for Candice & Anthony’s Performance Paddling clinic as well!

On Thursday, March 8th, a free children’s surf clinic for special needs children will take place under the direction of the THERASURF organization.
On Saturday evening, the Punta Sayulita Classic benefit concert will feature reggae recording legend, Pato Banton. The concert is free and will take place on Sayulita Beach. Concert time 8:00 p.m.
On Sunday evening following both days of completion, the Classic Awards Dinner Fiesta will be held at the Don Pedros oceanfront event palapa where the competitors and guests will enjoy an authentic Mexican BBQ buffet, live music and a live raffle. The Classic Fiesta is open to the public and tickets may be purchased at the door.
All proceeds raised from the Classic after covering expenses will be donated to the local Sayulita chapter of the Reef Check Foundation and The Punta Sayulita Foundation.”

Transworld Surf Magazine Dive and Surf Dream Trip

Just got the report from my buddy Justin Cote who along with some spearing and surfing buddies just did a really enviable trip down the coast from San Diego to the islands and some of the best waves and pinnacles on their way to Mexico. I did my best to at least get invited but alas I surf like a three legged donkey and therefor am not very photo worthy.
They crushed it though and there will be a spread in the upcoming Transworld Surf. Here is Justin's report from the Transworld webpage. Check it out:
Baja By Boat
A rag tag band of hired guns ventures into Baja in search of waves, fish, and fun.
Like a lot of great adventures, this one began on a barstool. I’d gotten word that an old friend, Cary Dodson from Success Sportfishing, was taking his 58-foot boat, the Success, from its mooring in San Diego to their winter fishing grounds near Magdalena Bay—a 600 mile journey south. Instantly I thought of the amazing surf and spearfishing you could discover along the way. I brought the idea of surf/dive trip up to Cary and he was pumped. “I’ve always wanted to do something like that,” he said over a happy hour beer. “The potential is limitless.” Over the course of a the next few months we’d meet at the same bar and check out nautical charts and plot a course that would, in theory, put us into some decent surf and really good spearfishing...

Happy New Year! Time to clean house and get rid of some photos.
I simply have too many.
Back in the good ol' days when cameras used film and before the soul of photography was highjacked by Photoshop and the digital age, you took only a few photos and you made them count when you did.
Sadly, the art of single photo has been tarnished a bit but not lost. I myself have fallen, or should I say climbed, onto the digital bandwagon and find myself sifting through hundreds of pictures at the end of a trip and then have to battle with deleting only the best.
The difference between GOOD photographers, and you and I, is that single shot. That skill it takes to come home with 100 great pics out of 400.
The 1/4 rule is what I'm aspiring to.
That goal... is still a ways out, for now, I resign to spending hours on end dumping thousands of megabites of photos that will be never seen again to save place on my computer for ones that matter.
Well I'm going to start dumping them here for your enjoyment, photographers rarely share the ones that suck, they only want you to see the fantastic ones, the photoshopped, cropped, color corrected and sorted out from 100 crappy ones.
Here's the ones that aren't making the cut: This week, Mark Healey and his big Dogtooth Tuna from our FREEDIVEFIJI.com trip. The fish was a monster but these pics are going in the bin...

4. "This one of Mark and Jaga is pretty cool but this was the lesser of the two I shot like this and had to go. Stoke that this fish brought to the trip was amazing. The guys that just got back from there saw some in the 200lb class so I hope to get back to visit them soon...

Handrail w/ Jeff Doran: Behind the shot

I've been spending a lot of time down in Islamorada this year at The Otherside Boardsports Shop. We've been doing alot of work building moldular features used for wakeboarding and kiteboarding. I was down in December and while I was in the shop I got introduced to a mutual friend by the name of Jeff Doran. He is an extremely talented photographer and artist from Savannah, Georgia and was down visiting some family in the keys. We got to talking one night about different shot ideas for kiting and how the pull of the kite allows for a much more diverse style of pictures. Sometimes when the wind isn't strong enough or you just don't feel like staying up wind its fun to cruise down the coastline and hitch hike back or try and catch a ride from some friends. On one of my last downwinders from Whale Harbour to Anne's Beach in Islamorada I came up to the sea wall at an anonymous restaurant in Islamorada and noticed a short hand rail coming down the sea wall onto the flats. I decided to swing into it a couple times and managed to stall on the very top of the rail and even transfer from the windward rail to the leeward which was definitely a bit sketchy. Later that night Jeff and I were sharing a couple beers when I told him about the handrail and he started busting my chops that we should just go hit it right now since he had all his camera gear in his truck. I decided to go for it and hopped straight into the water in my Salt Life baggies and a Flanel (it was pretty chilly). I hit it about a dozen times and came out with some killer shots that ended up getting a full page center fold in Kiteboarding Magazine. Here's one of the shots from the session. Thanks again Jeff for making me charge it and killing it behind the lens!

Youthful Energy

When I was in college I worked with alot of the magazines that circulate around the kiteboarding industry. I was the founder of the Collegiate Kiteboarding Association and I did what I could to provide an easy entry for younger riders into the sport of kiteboarding. Since then i've been approached by a couple magazines about doing stories or providing content. This year during a trip to Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean with my good friend Oliver Berlic, Aaron Sales of Kiteboarding Magazine contacted me about doing a story catching up with what I am doing now that i'm out of college.
